Most researchers who have employed the job demands-resources (JD-R) model to investigate the factors influencing work engagement, have omitted the effects of personal characteristics. In this study, we discussed the moderating effects of proactive personality on the influence of social support and work-family conflict (WFC) on work engagement. Participants comprised 477 workers in several airports in eastern China. The results showed that social support had a positive effect on work engagement, and WFC had a negative effect on work engagement. These influences were moderated by the proactive personality of the individual. We have also discussed the role of personality in the JD-R model.
