Featured Topic: Organizational Citizenship Behavior
In the past decade, we have received and published over 75 articles on the topic of organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). Given the frequency of its appearance in our archives, we have chosen this concept as our second featured topic. One of the more widely quoted definitions of OCB was put forward by Organ (1988), who stated that this is an “individual behavior that is discretionary, not directly or explicitly recognized by the formal reward system” (p. 4).†
The number of OCB-related research models developed and examined by our authors—despite the wide range of subject matter covered in SBP Journal, which spans all aspects of social, personality, and developmental psychology—indicates that we do not yet fully understand the precursors to, factors affecting and affected by, and outcomes of OCB. Among the scholars working to clarify our understanding of this variable is SBP Journal Consulting Editor, Jin Nam Choi, who has a longstanding interest in individuals’ adaptive behavior in organizational contexts.
