A mail survey of 519 Southern Baptists tested the prepotency of social linkages of predicting commitment in voluntary organizations. The results of the study indicated that instrumentality theory was a weak predictor of organizational commitment, while results were notably more consistent with cohesion theory. The results are discussed and implications for theoretical and empirical research are addressed.
