We examined the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and metacognitions about smartphone use by conducting a latent profile analysis. Participants were 470 college students from a university in China, who completed the second version of the Big Five Personality Inventory as well as the Metacognitions about Smartphone Use Questionnaire. Results showed that the Big Five personality traits could be divided into four latent classes: overcontrolled, contradiction, doubt, and resilience. The classes showed different relationships with positive and negative metacognitions about smartphone use, with individuals in the overcontrolled and contradiction classes exhibiting more apparent negative metacognitions. The results support the importance of paying attention to the effects of neuroticism.
